MONTREAL — An 18-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday in the stabbing death of his 14-year-old sister in Montreal’s west end.
Maor Attar was arraigned from his hospital bed after allegedly suffering injuries during the attack Monday evening. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8.
Attar’s mother allegedly returned home to find her daughter dead in a pool of blood. A few hours later, police arrested the brother not far away, calling him an “important witness” in his sister’s death. After several hours’ interrogation, police named him as a suspect in the murder.
A cousin of the victim was beside himself on Tuesday morning when a journalist informed him of what had happened.
“Oh, my God, Oh my God,” he exclaimed. “She’s an innocent! It’s a quiet family.”
Neighbours were equally distraught.
“I am completely shocked. I cannot believe that something like this could happen so close to home,” said a neighbour.
An autopsy will be performed on the girl’s body.
