A bomb scare at Toronto Island’s airport saw a Porter Airlines flight evacuated early Friday afternoon.
The drama unfolded when a flight attendant on Porter Flight 387 “overheard a passenger use the words ‘pipe bomb’ during pre-flight checks” around noon, according to a Porter statement issued later Friday afternoon.
There were 30 passengers and four crew members on board the 70-seat plane as the flight crew prepared to leave Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport for Chicago’s Midway International Airport, the statement said.
Everyone was evacuated from the plane before Toronto Police 14 Division, Marine Unit and Emergency Task Force officers arrived. Tactical officers searched the plane, but found no evidence of a bomb, Const. Wendy Drummond said.
One man — a passenger whose age and name were not immediately known — was spoken to at the airport before he was taken to 14 Division station for further questioning.
“We are pleased to report that the police investigation has determined there was no actual safety concern,” the Porter statement said. “Porter’s crew and other staff handled the situation professionally and appropriately. We commend them for their actions.”
