The only hope to stop the airport grope
Last Updated: November 27, 2010 2:00am
There is little doubt “Don’t touch my junk” will be the Phrase of the Year when the media begins its inevitable reflections of 2010 — perhaps even replacing 2007’s formidable “Don’t tase me, bro'” as the odds-on favourite for Phrase of the Decade.
But let’s not do the rope-a-grope on airport security.
Let’s place the blame where it belongs, because there is an epicentre when it comes to aggressively invasive airport pat-downs that have travellers rightfully incensed — even to the point that groping has picked up the clever moniker of Gate Rape.
And that epicentre is political correctness.
Political correctness, supposedly born with the best liberal intentions, has become the greatest thief of personal liberty ever foisted upon modern democracy.
This cannot be overstated.
The only reason political correctness exists is to appease the loud minority while inflicting unreasonable hell on the majority.
The result will be the end of libertarianism.
The violation of a 15-year-old girl at the Sudbury airport — which got international press — is just another case of political correctness being taken to one more extreme.
Even if Sudbury were a terrorist haven for al-Qaida leadership, a teenaged white girl from Pickering, Ont., travelling with her mother after visiting her dying grandfather, would hardly be on anyone’s profile list for an aggressive pat-down.
So what was the point?
The point, we repeat, was to inflict hell on the majority so the legitimate profiling of a real threat doesn’t have someone like Canadian Arab Federation president Khaled Mouammar getting worked up with his ubiquitous indignation about racial targeting.
Political correctness is everywhere.
In our universities, political correctness has stolen freedom of speech by barring certain speakers — usually right wingers — because their presidents don’t want to soil their Depends with controversy, or because a couple of students have bicycle-locked their sorry selves on stage.
In police forces across this county, suspects are profiled every day in the fight against gangs and organized crime, but their chiefs are scared speechless to admit it.
So put the blame where it belongs — on political correctness.
And then grow some balls.
Or is that word now “junk?”
