Leading Canadian Muslim threatened

TORONTO – No matter how much pain a cancerous tumour can cause, Tarek Fatah says he knows a threat when he sees one.

This one on Twitter last month was not even veiled.

“This is an open threat to Xaar Boy @Tarek Fatah. I know where you live & and where your office is.”

The hospital, which moved him to another room and took his name off their registry, has taken it seriously.

But has Toronto Police?

The Fatah-founded Muslim Canadian Congress has issued statement from General Secretary Amna Bakhtiar saying “we have notified the police a number of times that an allegation of apostasy and blasphemy by Islamists against liberal and secular Muslims is tantamount to a death threat, but because of the influence of organized Islamic groups on the Toronto Police Force, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.”

Very serious assertions.

If Fatah did not have enough on his mind already — with a disease trying to kill him — the prominent Toronto author, radio host and journalist was not even hours out of surgery for a cancerous tumour on his spine when he found among his on-line get-well messages a vile tweet from a woman wearing a purple Hijab.

“Xaar boy means s— boy,” said Fatah, a moderate Muslim and author of The Jew is Not My Enemy. “I may be originally from Pakistan but I know Somali slang.”

He was soon after visited by two officers from 51 Division and all was going well.

“Then in came two men with long coats and they asked them to leave,” said Fatah. “They were Toronto Police intelligence officers who interrogated me for two hours.”

Later, at 11:30 p.m., his phone rang.

“The officer said, ‘I have some good news; you are safe,'” said Fatah. “They told me they had interviewed the girl and that she didn’t mean it.”

The much-respected Tarek said he asked if she would be charged?

“He said no because he didn’t think this was necessary,” said Fatah.

Tarek said he was immediately suspicious and wonders if he would be given the same break had he sent such an e-mail to her?

In a city where women have been jailed after blowing bubbles it seems like a fair question. She would have got a rougher ride had she parked illegally!

But a Toronto Police source says the tweet came from an overzealous teenager and was not deemed a serious threat. It is also been said to me the officer who interviewed her “is one of our best.”

But Fatah is not convinced.

“I recognized this Muslim officer as one who also decided to not charge the person in one of my other threats,” he said. “He also has done the same thing with some other secular Muslims who have been threatened by Islamists.”

Tarek said he feels the cop “interposed himself” and after meeting the woman, “offered to ‘mediate’ between the two of us. I slammed the phone on him after saying, ‘You are a cop, not the Caliphate of Cordoba.'”

It does seem odd to suggest giving such close access to someone who has written such a threat!

“But I will meet with this girl,” said Fatah emphatically. “But not in the hospital.”

Before that ever happens, I think Chief Bill Blair had better take a close look at all aspects.

While there may be “valid reasons not to lay charges” the MCC’s Bakhtiar said the “optics of the Toronto police assigning Muslim officers to investigate threats made by radicals against liberal Muslims and then not charging them, leaves the impression that when it comes to the safety of liberal Muslims, the TPS is more interested in multiculturalism rather than to serve and protect.”

Meanwhile, Tarek is in fighting spirit to battle both his cancer and mobility issues with a view to a big comeback on radio, TV and in print.

Perhaps, the author of the threatening tweet will be his first interview on Newstalk 1010 with co-host Ryan Doyle? Or could she end up in a courtroom yet?
