Chants of “Free Libya” rang out in Yonge-Dundas Square as a group of protesters gathered Sunday to rally the federal government into action against dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The group — many of Libyan heritage — demanded more from Prime Minister Stephen Harper than the sanctions in place against the Libyan leader.
“Not too many people know what’s going on there,” said Tarek Elparassi, who came to Canada from Libya 12 years ago. “It’s really a genocide.”
The crowd chanted in unison for democracy and freedom in the divided nation.
“I am proudly Canadian but I thought the Canadian government would support more,” Elparassi said. “I lived in that country more than 30 years and they deserve more.”
One voice in the crowd was that of Sarah Abdunnabi, 11, who was there with her father, Bashir, to express her concern for family and friends in Libya and to plead for the help of the Canadian government.
“This is ridiculous,” the girl said. “Mr. Stephen Harper needs to do something other than condemning this because … that’s not helping.”
The girl said she wrote letters to both Harper and federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, but was disappointed with the response.
The letters she received back only highlight the sanctions and make no mention of further action against the dictator.
