SO WHERE ARE OUR WORLDLY, ENLIGHTENED, LEFTIST ENTERTAINERS? YOU’D THINK THEY’D BE FIRST IN LINE TO DECRY THIS OBVIOUS ENFORCEMENT OF RELIGIOUS IDEALS, THEY MAKE NO BONES ABOUT CRITICIZING CHRISTIANS FOR ANYTHING THEY SAY IF IT’S IN DISAGREEMENT WITH THEIR LOFTY OPINIONS.

Police in Indonesia’s conservative province of Aceh raided a punk-rock concert on Saturday and are detaining 64 people at a police detention centre. Though no charges have been laid, and the crimes committed are not clear, the Associated Press reports that punk fans will spend 10 days, or longer, getting rehabilitation, religious classes and training in military-style discipline. They will then be sent home.
Local police chief Iskandar Hasan said Wednesday that after replacing their “disgusting” clothes, he handed each a toothbrush and commanded them to use it.
Aceh is the only province in the secular nation of 240 million to have imposed Islamic laws. Adultery is punishable by stoning. Homosexuals are thrown in jail or lashed in public.
Hasan says, “We’re not torturing anyone. We’re not violating human rights. We’re just trying to put them back on the right moral path.”
Nur Kholis, a national human rights commissioner, however, tells the AP that police have to explain what laws have been broken.
“Otherwise, they violated people’s right of gathering and expression,” he said.
The punks seem to be considered a scourge in the area. Deputy mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal “proudly” told the Jakarta Globe, “The presence of the punk community is disturbing, and disrupts the life of the Banda Aceh public.”
“This is a new social disease affecting Banda Aceh. If it is allowed to continue, the government will have to spend more money to handle them,” she said.
The concert was apparently a benefit to raise money for orphans.
“They told us in their permit application that they were Aceh Youth, holding a concert to raise money for orphans, but they didn’t say they were punks. They had marijuana and alcohol and everything at that concert,” Illiza said.
“Their morals are wrong. Men and women gather together, and that is against Islamic Shariah,” she said.
“We will keep conducting raids until they’re all caught, then we’ll bring them for reeducation here.
“Aceh is a Shariah region. Everyone should obey it and the punk community is clearly against Shariah.
“This training will be an example in Indonesia of the reeducation of the punks.”
